City of New Buffalo Hosts Downtown Opening Celebration

Location: City of New Buffalo, Downtown North Whittaker Street

Date: June 14, 2018

Time: 3:30 p.m. EST

The City of New Buffalo and Downtown Development Authority, with their partner The Pokagon Fund, are celebrating the completion and opening of the multi-million-dollar investment in New Buffalo’s Downtown. The event will begin at the Northwest corner of Mechanic and Whittaker Streets for the unveiling of the Pokagon sculpture, and march south to Merchant and Whittaker Streets for the ceremonies and ribbon cutting. There will be entertainment, small bites, and other fun activities. The New Buffalo Farmer’s Market will begin at 4:00 p.m.

North Whittaker Street and the surrounding downtown areas represent the results of tens of thousands of hours of time committed by residents, city and regional officials, city staff and managers, volunteers, consultants and contractors to create an environment unique to the New Buffalo community. A visually appealing place for residents and visitors alike to safely access by walking, bicycling, or driving to create memories and build bonds was the ultimate goal. This project is the culmination of a $4 Million+ commitment by the community, including a $1.6 million grant by The Pokagon Fund, to replace functionally obsolete water and sewer lines, enhance the commercial viability of our downtown businesses, increase the overall number of available parking spaces, improve accessibility for persons of all abilities, and create a place for the community to gather and celebrate.
