NEW BUFFALO - The Pokagon Fund recently moved into its new offices at 821 E. Buffalo St. in New Buffalo.

"We want the community to know that The Pokagon Fund is putting down roots; we plan to be here for many years funding worthwhile projects that positively affect the people in this region," said John Miller, Pokagon Band tribal chair and Chairman of The Pokagon Fund Board of Directors, "and we look forward to being an integral part of the community."

An extensive remodeling project of an existing building and the grounds at the site that emulates the look of the nearby Four Winds Casino Resort was finished in late July.

The design for the remodeling project was provided by local architect Neringa Peseckas, of Neringa Design. Jonas Stirbys of New Buffalo Construction was the general contractor, and Sawyer Garden Center provided landscaping.

The property was purchased in September 2008.

"We felt it was important to support the work of local businesses," said Pokagon Fund Executive Director Mary Dunbar. "We are so pleased with the results and the work of all of our contractors, and we are thrilled to be in our new space."

The building contains offices for Dunbar and Grant Administrator Kelly Matti, a conference room for board meetings, and room for future growth.

"We have also reserved space to display the handiwork of Pokagon Band artisans," said Dunbar. "We are working with members of the tribe to provide various art forms such as baskets, drums, regalia, paintings and more. We thought it would be a great tribute to the Pokagon Band for all they have done for the community in creating The Pokagon Fund."

The Pokagon Fund was housed at the Frankle Law Firm office at 121 W. Merchant Street in New Buffalo during its first two years of existence. Larry Frankle, who passed away on April 18, was one of the original board members of The Pokagon Fund.

"It was so generous of Larry to allow us to use space at his law firm for The Pokagon Fund offices the past two years," said Dunbar. "We are so very grateful. We plan to honor Larry's memory by hanging his photograph in the Frankle Conference Room."

The Pokagon Fund is planning an open house at its new facility in the upcoming months.
